Dr Brooks’ research has received generous community support to enable her to start this important work, largely in a part-time manner. Subsequent advances are now critically dependent on supporting the continuity of experienced personnel to drive the project in a full-time capacity – with the aim to secure major research funding in due course, once techniques and preliminary data are collected. This will enable the team to continue recruiting study participants, process blood samples and rapidly establish highly specialised techniques required to test our hypotheses. These techniques, once established, hold the potential to not only improve our understanding of immune dysfunction, but also guide development of diagnostic tests and therapeutic targets.
